Some ideas for using Nim's Island in the classroom

Maria Becquigny (Australia) has shared these ideas - she put them up on her www.think.com site and got lots of discussion from them!

1) IF YOU COULD SAIL AROUND THE WORLD...

...just like Nim and Jack, and choose ANYwhere on the Earth to live, where would you choose?
Why there?
Tell us what sort of dwelling you would choose and what you would like to have in your home.

2) PORTRAIT OF NIM

suggest words to describe Nim and draw her portrait, based on the author's physical description on the first page of the book.

3) FIND NIM'S ISLAND!

Find a photo of a real island that might be Nim's...try flying over the Pacific Ocean using Google Earth...

4) NIM'S ROOM IN THE HUT

create a drawing or a model of Nim's room, including those items listed in the author's description of the hut. What else could Nim have in her room, using only materials found or grown on the island?

5) BAMBOO BRAINSTORM

Jack and Nim grow bamboo on the island. It must be very useful stuff! They use it for pipes to water their garden... Can you think of other useful items they could make from bamboo?

Nim's Island in the Basque Country: Nimen Uhartea

Nim's Spanish publisher brought this Basque translation out last year. The Spanish edition has the same cover - isn't it wonderful!
